-Winter 2005- Stay Warm by Meekochan -Winter 2005- Stay Warm by Meekochan
I know, it's a bit early. Don't kill me. Here's my pic for the Winter Holidays 2005.
:: runs and hides ::
If you want to read whatever misc things I have to say about it (that looooong description that typically goes in this artist's comment box here)...read this.

[edit]
If you immediately noticed Varynn's left eye and got freaked out by it, I apologize. Originally I planned to cover it with snow but later thought his left eye doesn't stick out enough to be noticed. If you want, I'll do another version with snow covering his left eye (that will be one huge snowflake though...). I will not add the iris and pupil though, since I designed him to have his eye like that.

[edit] Oct 22, 2005
I'm not pointing fingers, so don't think I'm talking about you. However, aren't artists and art appreciators (which would be all of you) suppose to be open-minded? Please don't be yet another person that hints/suggest that I should make Varynn's left eye normal. You're more than welcome to tell me that it freaks you out or whatever, but please don't make yourself sound right (and me wrong) by suggesting what is considered 'normal.'

nice job, the different left eye only gives this more character. A fitting photo for the fast approaching 2006 winter

Wow, this is really great.. The sheer amount of detail and great tone work is beautiful. And I love the composition of the whole piece. Also I love the hand, for some reason.. seems odd.. But the position of it and the smoothness is really good.. or something. Anyway the only crit I can think of is that his left ear (or right whichever way u look at it) looks a little off-place. I appreciate it's pointing in the different direction but they don't seem to join at the same place on the head. But maybe it's just an illusion I duno.. Either way. I'm being picky.
Also I admit at first I thought it was a girl. But this isnt a complaint. Because looking at him I can see him as both.. Anyhow.. I'm rambling. Very good work. :)

Oh and I think the eye looks fine. ;)

The ears' placement keeps messing with me. Even when I reason out why it's correct, it still doesn't like right to me etiher.
:: shrugs ::

Eh heh heh...
he looks like a girl cause I used my face as a reference...

Thanks for the comment. ^^

I like it. At first glance I thought it was Link from Zelda, but that's only b/c I'm a huge Zelda fan. I like the shading and the hair a lot :)

The shading is actually really well done. I dont mean the shadowing I mean the depth and texturing of the colours, as well as the contrasts within the shades of colours used. Really quite an excellent job. Top notch skills. I also really like how you linked to the different stages and detailed descriptions. Quite a masterful piece. Good job!

Did the overall shading/shadow look very wrong? You mentioned that the depth is good, but that you didn't mean the shadowing.

No, the shading and shadowing is very well done. The left side of the face seems quite abrupt, perhaps not as smooth a transition from light to shadow as it could have been.

There are two things that bother me about this piece. #1 is the way the ears are going... they don't seem right.. I think maybe if they were going up and on an angle more it would have helped. #2 is your character has no eyeball! It is creeping me out... lol although now I just read that you don't want to change it? Howcome? Can't you easily put an iris and pupil in there behind the hair strand? Other than those 2 things I really like the picture. It is very cute and I love the colour scheme... alson nice job on the shading!

#1 The ears stick out at 90 degrees and his head is suppose to be tilted down slightly. But since his face is at a three-quarter view, the ears aren't line up horizontally on the picture plane. That's what I imaged out when I drew the ears. Still, I could be wrong since I didn't have a reference pic. >_<

#2 If I gave him an eyepatch, would you still think I should remove it and draw in a complete eyeball? Not everyone (real or ficticious) is perfect. I would like to stick with the original design I made instead of going with what's normal. ^^

Aside from that, thanks for your comment. ^^

Well, first off. Where is the right pupil? Its gone! I realize that there is hair covering part of it, but if you relate the pupil on the left to the one that should on the right, part of it would stand out behind the hair that is in front of it. This piece has a nice gesture to it. The expression and the way the character is holding the scarf up around its mouth make it look cold. I don't know if I like the way you rendered the snow flakes. They seem forced rather than really incorporated into the the piece. There is some amazing detail in the hair and the fur on the hat. Overall I think it's a good practice piece for something much more complex and cool. Keep up the good work.

His left eye is suppose to be like that. Sorry, part of the character design. >_<

How does the snow seem forced? I admit that I don't know how to do falling snow. I also failed to find any tutorials. If you have any suggestions (besides observing and practicing), that would be great.

Thanks for your words. ^^

oh I see, that looks a bit worng what I typed, what was I thinking, actualy, I probably wasn't thinking to much. I meant it looks a bit off. It's at the wrong angle or something, it should be pointing up!

As for the snow, i wish I could help, it just looks like random white splotches to me! As you can probably guess I can't actualy draw myself :lol: I'm just a critic :crazy:

I drew the ear point downward because his head is slightly tilted down. Mm...it's probably not obvious then.

Earlier, someone said the snow was too uniform, so I completely redid the snow making it more random. Er...does it really look like random splotches?

Thanks for clarifying. ^^

from a perspective point of view (no punin tended) even if his head was tilted down (and it doesn't realy seem that way, at least to me) his ear would still be pointing upwards in respect to his head y aknow!

the snow does look random but it still looks a lot like white spots, perhaps if you looks at some photos of blizzards or something as reference? Wish I could help more with that

No problem, you're more than welcome!

I draw elves so that their ears are perpendicular to the head. And so I imagined that one ear points up and the other down since his face is at a three-quarter view.
:: shrugs ::

I'll have to do a search on snow pics then. Or wait till snow starts falling again. >_<

Thanks again. ^^

I think this is fantastic. You did, an amazing job with this piece. Everything slots together perfectly and it all just, looks amazing. The hair must've taken ages to do, but you can tell, it looks fantastic. The colouring is top notch and I love the shading. The folds in the clothes just make it look like he's wearing a huge, baggy, comfy warm jumper to keep him warm in the snow. His left eye I freaking adore! It adds a shit load of character to this already amazing looking piece. You did a fantastic job with this. Great work! Please, keep it up!

I think with the left eye that freaks people out, you'd just have to add a faint outline of iris and pupils. If you wanted to that is. I understand that it is your design so you don't have to do a darn thing :P

Anyways, the shading is done really really well, and I absolutely looooooooove the hair. The folds in the cloth were also done very nicely as well.

Overall you did a great job.

Thanksyouthankyouthankyou!

Oh, I feel better reading something super positive. ^^

I probably won't add anything to the left eye. Me lazy. But if people want a non-freaky version, I'm thinking of adding more hair (oh joy...) to cover the eye. That would be better than having a huge snowflake.

I'm surprise to hear you say that the shading is done "really really well." I already know that the shading is off since it's hard to see exactly where the light source is coming from (a source I don't even know). And then yesterday evening, I realized that the shading on the right side of his face greatly contrast the shading on his hair and was thinking of utter doom. >_<

Or maybe the shading just *looks* good and that's what you mean?

Glad to hear you love the hair. Royal pain that was. Yup.
:: mumbles ::

Wow, you noticed the folds in the clothes! I thought they would be hard to see since his shirt is dark. Silly me. Gotta stop assuming things. >_<

Thanks again for your words. ^^

And yeah I meant the shading looked good when I said it was done really really well. I didn't pay much heed to light source.

I originally was going to cover his left eye with snow (since it's freaky), but later thought that eye didn't attract much attention. Guess I'm wrong. >_<
